The house is but a few minutes from the international town of Ubud with its plethora of great eating places, including, Tut Mak for good vegetarian meals, Casa Luna for a great choice at very reasonable prices and video, Riyoshi for shushi and tuna carpaccio, Dirty Duck for great environment, excellent gnocchi and crispy duck, Terrazzo for that extra special cappuccino, Batan Waru for a good tempe curry, Jazz Cafe for seafood soup and jazz, Bali Buddha for chocolate chip cookies, Naughty Noris for ex-pat polemics and great fresh tuna, sashimied or grilled on Thursday nights, Arys for late night chai, Nomads for bamboo gamelan music and food, Talisman at Goa-Gaja for Nyoman, Morni and an italian flavor, Exiles for Saturday night dancing, the Royal Palace for Balinese performance, and the Arma Museum for art. Ganesha bookstore near the post office buys and sells second hand books If you return a book that you purchased from them you get 1/2 back. Craft and art shops are everywhere, and the big market can supply most needs, there is no shortage of places at which to consume.
Ubud is the art center of Bali and a great base for expeditions around the island. It is not so hot as the coast being up the volcano a little. There are many hotels there and a good suite can be had for $1000 a night or a small room for $5.
